ABSTRACT

We turn now from a concern with manliness and politics to a concern with the nature of

modern society and modern “man.” 1 Weber considered the fate of modern man to be

linked to the bureaucratic nature of modern society-capitalist or socialist. In both

capitalism and socialism that fate hinges on a conflict between means and ends with means-such as capital and bureaucracy-coming to replace ends-ultimate values.

Similarly, a bureaucratic mentality comes to replace a heroic warrior mentality.
