Many variables contribute to or detract from school effectiveness including relationships inside the school and between school personnel and community stakeholders. Poor relationships, regardless of their cause, have a negative effect. In this chapter’s vignette, for example, Bart Jones obviously inherited a difficult situation. Believing that the superintendent expected him to provide order and control immediately, he made it clear to teachers that he was in charge and they were his subordinates. Though his actions may appear to be appropriate in terms of eliminating rule violations, their longer-term effects on the school are likely to be negative.
