ABSTRACT

Part IV took the central question ‘What does it mean to be in this place?’ and explored its relevance within the design process. Lewis (2007), at the start of Chapter 4.2, reiterates the importance of considering what is of value in design: ‘In order to create extraordinary spaces with integrity and atmospheric presence we need to identify what we find valuable, what we are moved and inspired by’ (Lewis 2007: 228). This search for what adults and children find valuable in their learning communities takes participation beyond tokenism, looking for sustained ways of maintaining dialogue and proposing principles which may be helpful in establishing such listening.
