Effective managers are going to be required to lead and direct change; and cope with the demands and pressures of the operating and wider environment. Effective managers are going to have to create the conditions in which effective staff performance is both possible and also achievable. Effective managers are going to have to develop a body of professional expertise, especially in the field of human behaviour, that enables them to understand why particular pressures are being applied, and how best to respond to them.
