ABSTRACT

Neighbourhoods are places where people live. They imply a sense of belonging and of community, with some shared educational, shopping and leisure activities that provide a focus for social life. For many people, especially old and young people and less affluent and less mobile people, the neighbourhood can provide a network of friendships and of mutual support. Such social networks are recognized as being important to happiness and health.
