ABSTRACT

In his impressive work on ‘The History of Knowledge’, Charles van Doren (1991) argues that there is no reason to believe that the geographical action radius of modern man will come to a standstill. He foresees an accelerated mobility of people in the next century mainly induced by fast transport and communication technology, by more leisure time, and rising levels of welfare. Is the behaviour of ‘holm mobilis‘ compatible with constraints emerging from ecological, spatial or social considerations?
