Gary Becker’s influential A Treatise on the Family (1981) applies conservative economic theory to marriage and the family, and shows in the process that attempts to regulate or influence these practices through laws or redistributive measures will be undercut by the private market responses of rational individuals. The book is typical of the conservative approach to policy issues.
