ABSTRACT

In chapter 1 we reported that at least 10 million additional teachers will be needed worldwide by 2015 if Education for All (EFA) is to be achieved. Th is is a substantial proportion of the current global teaching force of around 73 million (UIS, 2009). However, the number of teachers has increased by some 1.5 million annually since 2000 so progress is being made, although many of these new teachers have little or no training before they join their schools.
