ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss the tasks that need to be accomplished in the college application process. They also explain how to build a list of appropriate colleges and then how to narrow that list down to a manageable number of schools. In addition, the authors provide practical suggestions for counselors to assist students in asking for teacher recommendations, registering for standardized testing, and completing applications. The Common Application online is a powerful tool for students. Naviance also provides a scattergram that graphically shows how students from school with similar grades and standardized test scores fared at individual colleges. Unlike students in professional or vocational programs, students in liberal arts degree programs receive broad exposure to a variety of areas while focusing on a few key specialties that lead to an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. A liberal arts major offers a broad overview of the arts, sciences, and humanities.
