Empowering Students in Their Essay Writing (11th–12th Grades)
Caution: Too often, when discussing a fictional character, a historical figure, or an issue of importance, students fall into writing an analytical paper, much like they would write for an English or social studies class. Remember, this essay is different. This essay must show an influence and how that influence has impacted a student’s life. If students choose to answer numbers 2, 4, or 6, they should be careful not to make this essay so analytical that it does not reveal who they are. Be wary of answering number 6, a topic of your choice. Again, the personal essay is about explaining who the student is; a “topic of your choice” may be so vague that it does not reveal the essence of the student.
