ABSTRACT

Men are frequently more difficult than women to engage in psychotherapy. Therefore, when conducting couples therapy, special sensitivity to men’s reactions and tendencies is warranted to improve the success of the treatment. John Gottman has conducted 35 years of research on couples and has constructed a comprehensive theory regarding what influences and enhances a couple’s stability and satisfaction. This chapter will present Gottman’s research, theory, and therapeutic approach while emphasizing his insights regarding men’s issues and couples counseling.
