ABSTRACT
The books of the Bible did not come down from heaven, but were compiled and written by real people in particular social and historical circumstances. The last chapter examined what we can know of the history behind the Bible, but now we consider the variety of social contexts in ancient Israel, early Judaism, and the beginnings of the Christian church that provided the background for the creation of what would eventually become Scripture.
