ABSTRACT

The market for services such as escape, relaxation, and fantasy has drawn women from varied backgrounds to work in an array of sex related jobs in Nevada since the days when mining was king. The state's tourist trade, as in other vacation destinations across the globe, draws workers from shrinking employment sectors in other regions who seek new opportunities. Nevada's legal brothels have always served as another choice for women who, for whatever reasons, choose to work as prostitutes. In an increasingly unequal market, brothels draw women who are unable to make ends meet in service industry jobs who are willing to try sex for pay in a legal setting. Finally, a growing global sex industry means more women make careers in legal sexual commerce. To conclude that brothel workers are free from constraints, however, is just as naïve as to believe that women are shackled into sex work.
