ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 you first learned about the developmental approach to counseling that considers the client’s life stage and developmental level and encourages movement within and between levels (Ivey & Ivey, 2007). Individuals progress through developmental levels, or stages, in relatively similar or predictable sequences. In order to grow and function effectively at each stage of development, people accomplish developmental tasks unique to that stage. Just as people move through the lifespan in relatively predictable ways, so, too, do professional counselors and their clients move through stages of counseling, accomplishing important tasks in the process.
