ABSTRACT
Rom Harré conceives the world as an interacting system of powerful particulars that can be regarded as efficacious agents. Such a worldview stands in sharp contrast with the positivist tradition and the related Humean principle of causality as regular concomitance. Applied to the social umwelt it means that only people can be regarded as powerful particulars. People have the power to act and those actions constitute the social realm.
