TH E C E N T R E F O R T H E AT R E Practices ‘Gardzienice’ has produced fewperformances – just seven in more than thirty years1 – but they have placed this Polish group at the forefront of international theatre. Richard Schechner recognises Gardzienice as ‘one of the world’s most important experimental and communitybased performance groups’.2 In their introduction to Gardzienice’s British tour in 1989, Richard Gough and Judy Christie described the Company as ‘pursuing an artistic endeavour that merges with a “Life Project” ’ (Gough and Christie 1989: 3), while Susan Sontag has identified Gardzienice as ‘one of the few essential theatre companies working anywhere in the world today’.3
