ABSTRACT
In area studies on contemporary China, whether in the fi eld of politics or economics or society, the Communist Party of China (CPC) is always at the heart of the matter. Even when research makes a certain degree of headway, the existence of the party remains as a fi nal enigma. The CPC, whose party constitution stipulates that it is “the core of leadership,” looms over everything.
