ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the position and the functions of Chinese trade unions under marketization from both sides: the arguments for trade union reform and the actual condition as illustrated by a survey of primary (basic-level) trade union chairmen conducted between March 2004 and June 2006. The analyses will provide useful materials for considering the direction in which the Chinese corporatist system is going.
