ABSTRACT
Preserving and protecting natural environments is an integral part of the development process. Social and economic progress is not sustainable if it causes the rapid depletion of natural resources or destruction of local habitats. Economic growth and environmental preservation constitute complementary parts of the same process of change, and development assistance is increasingly structured to meet these twin objectives.
