Perspectives on the development of identity in adolescence Within the social sciences, there are important differences in the ways in which the development of identity is conceptualized. These differences were most apparent in the past, as modern perspectives have, to a degree,

been converging. Essentially, psychologists and sociologists have developed separate approaches to identity and contrast to the extent that they see it as being grounded within the core of the individual rather than being shaped through engagement in an external social world.
