The Confucian Way
Confucius' teachings have in¯uenced virtually every aspect of Chinese culture for millennia. Two concepts, however, are of particular interest when it comes to the spread of footbinding, the effect it has had on the psyche of Chinese women, and the role it plays as a metaphor in the collective unconscious of all of us as women. The ®rst of these notions relates to the way Confucius saw the family and the way family members should relate to one another. The other is a concept known as ®lial piety.
