ABSTRACT

When Ruby ®rst came to my of®ce, I was surprised to ®nd that she was Chinese by ethnic origin, since her Canadian-born parents had Anglicized the family name. She was formal and polite in the way she carried herself, appearing more White Anglo-Saxon Protestant than Oriental. She was short and small, very soft-spoken and gentle. She was controlled in her feelings while she told me about herself, but I sensed much turmoil hidden within her tiny frame and the expressionless face behind her glasses.
