ABSTRACT

As I re¯ect on my life living in Zurich, I feel deeply moved by the encounter with the old Chinese lady whose bound feet helped revive my childhood memories of bound feet in various contexts. I became increasingly preoccupied with the Chinese custom of footbinding and pondered over the psychological meaning of the devaluation and repression of the Feminine as it relates to my own cultural roots. Eventually I was led to embark on an extensive exploration of the socio-cultural history of this phenomenon, in the hope of elucidating its impact on the psyche of modern Chinese women.
