ABSTRACT

This chapter re¯ects on sex and sexuality within the context of culture. It does not describe different sexual practices from numerous different cultures as this would take up the whole book. More importantly, such an approach could fall into the trap of assuming that `culture' refers only to those from minority cultural backgrounds, whereas the dominant culture is seen as `standard' or `the norm' and thus the cultural in¯uences in that context become invisible. What this chapter does instead is to argue for the importance of considering culture in relation to sex and sexuality, discuss ethical issues in relation to some sexual practices, but most importantly to allow the reader to re¯ect on their own position on this topic, as well as provide exercises for training.
