ABSTRACT

Learning area, activity centre, workstation and interest area are just some of the terms teachers use interchangeably to describe an area in the classroom assigned to an aspect of the curriculum.

Each area is a place where:

• a variety of activities, resources, equipment or artefacts reinforce and extend pupils’ learning

• pupils are given the opportunity to work individually, in pairs or in a group • pupils work independently, developing creativity and taking risks in a non-threatening

environment • the surrounding wall space is utilised to support and enhance the subject area.
