ABSTRACT

In this chapter we want to reflect upon the role sound and movement can have in a community of agents, such as fireflies, bees and dolphins, or even atoms, molecules, and people. The physical environment provides these agents with sound and light as means of communication. One cannot say that atoms and molecules are interested in communication; nevertheless, sound and light can make them move or vibrate in a coherent manner. Higher animals and people, as social agents, are interested in communication with their peers and will actively listen and look to them. Besides spoken and written language, music and movement constitute the main channels of communication. Music and movement have the advantage that they can support many-to-many communication, while spoken language supports only one-to-one or one-to-many communication.
