ABSTRACT

Conductors use movement, gesture, and facial expressions to motivate a group of musicians to perform with expertise and expression. Conductors are the only musicians who do not normally make sound while performing. The techniques of conducting have evolved slowly over many hundreds of years, from the ancient musical hand-sign-language of chironomy1 to the modern gestures that have been established and documented for Western classical music. Conducting is not only a gestural art form; it is also the specialized currency of a group of highly skilled musicians who are respected for their abilities in musicianship, inner hearing, memorization, motivation, and personnel management. With a rich history and lore, conducting is an interesting area to study and to transform with digital technologies.
