ABSTRACT

The overall framework for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction (CBCST) includes step-by-step in-session interventions and homework assignments. Psychoeducation materials are crucial for facilitating the therapeutic process, as they broaden clients' understanding of sexual function and socialize them in the active roles that they play throughout treatment. Medical treatments and pharmacologic interventions should not be used as "stand alone" remedies for sexual dysfunction. A core issue is whether the couple integrates these medical interventions into their style of intimacy, pleasure, and eroticism. CBCST theorists and clinicians devote substantial attention to the role of emotion in human functioning. Sensate Focus/Pleasuring involves a set of psychosexual skill exercises assigned for couples to complete at home. CBCST provides experiences to alter and enhance the couple's intimate sexual relationship. The clinician is directive in therapy sessions and designs homework exercises. The level of clinical direction is guided by the distress and chronicity of the SD.
