BELL TELEPHONE LABORATORIES At the forefront of communications research, Bell Laboratories for decades was regarded as the largest and most successful private research organization in the world. Created as the research and development division of American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T), Bell Labs is now a part of Lucent Technologies. Best known for its development of the transistor, laser technology, and information theory, the organization boasts more than 27,000 patents and 11 Nobel laureates. Headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey, Bell Labs consists of a global community of some 16,000 people in 16 countries.
