ABSTRACT

Although we have been emphasizing the need to embrace a broad definition of technology so far, we focus on computers in the first part of this chapter because it was our observations of the problems that children encountered with them that led us to explore ways of providing support. It was only in the course of doing this that it became clear that the computers themselves were the origin of many of the problems, and that by thinking about technology in different ways it is possible to eliminate some of these difficulties. Having outlined these problems, we go on to describe an approach in which we combined meeting the aims of our research with providing opportunities for professional development.
