Framing the Questions: An Interview with James Oakes, conducted by Rachel Mattson James Oakes received his PhD degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and is currently on the faculty of the City University of New York Graduate Center. He has written extensively about the history of the U.S. South, slavery, anti-slavery and U.S. politics. His books include The Ruling Race (1982; second edition 1998), Slavery and Freedom: An Interpretation of the Old South (1990), and The Radical and the Republican: Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and the Triumph of Antislavery Politics (2007), which won the Lincoln Prize for the best Civil War era book.
