He is the author of When the Old Left Was Young: Student Radicals and America’s First Mass Student Movement, 1929-1941 (1993), editor of Dear Mrs Roosevelt: Letters from Children of the Great Depression (2002), coeditor of The Free Speech Movement: Reflections on Berkeley in the 1960s (2002), and author of Freedom’s Orator: Mario Savio and the Radical Legacy of the 1960s (2009).
