ABSTRACT
Arthur Morrison, writing late in the nineteenth century, derides the typical middle-class responses to poverty he outlines here in the introduction to Tales of Mean Streets (1894). Having lived in the East End, Morrison writes in part to correct similar pronouncements about London’s poor by middle-class writers with questionable experience of their subject.
