ABSTRACT

Leslie is 10 years old. For the past 6 months, she has refused to go anywhere but school unless accompanied by one of her parents. She was fearful in “unfamiliar places” (her words), including soccer practice, playing at her friend’s house, or even taking out the garbage at night. Leslie has no prior history of separation anxiety disorder. In fact, she is quite distressed by her fear and embarrassed by her inability to be away from her parents. Furthermore, she does not like to have to go to therapy and wishes that she was in school instead.
