ABSTRACT

In this chapter we describe a three-day intervention involving patients and their families. This approach offers a more intensive intervention than the workshops described in Chapter 11 or the family work used as part of outpatient treatment. We have used it primarily for people with treatment resistant anorexia nervosa during inpatient care, as preparation for transfer into the community. The risk for relapse following inpatient care is high and careful planning and preparation is essential. This intervention could also be used for individuals at high risk who have failed to respond to outpatient care. Most of our experience relates to using it to supplement inpatient care. Elements of this programme, such as the skills training, are common to the other interventions we use for carers. The context, however, is more individualised and tailored to the two participating families. In this chapter, we outline the structure and timetable of the three days and give some details of the exercises that we use.
