ABSTRACT
Nurse educators have been challenged by Porter O’Grady (2001) “to prepare students to be creative, fl exible, adaptable, and capable of analytical and critical thinking in any health care delivery situation” (Sumner 2007a). It is timely to ask if nurse educators are achieving this. Nurses claim that nursing has its own body of knowledge and specialized skills that are put into the service of others. The body of knowledge and the need to help others is just accepted as the norm, but one must ask if this isn’t rather blind and non-refl ective, and whether we are in fact preparing the sorts of nurses that Porter O’Grady is challenging us to produce.
