ABSTRACT

Transnational activism has been the focus of a growing body of literature since the 1990s. It is defi ned as cross-border collective action, involving people from two or more countries around specifi c campaigns or longer-term movements. Transnational activism takes different forms, from lobbying and advocacy to protests and direct action. It is carried out by small groups, networks, organizations, or mass movements. This chapter examines the origins of transnational feminist activism by situating it in the larger contexts of globalization and the emergence of transnational social movement activism. It describes several types of transnational feminist networks and draws attention to the different strategies deployed.
