ABSTRACT
Although person-centred theory has never asserted that the socalled `core conditions' of empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence are necessary and suf®cient conditions for constructive personality change (the hypothesis demands all six conditions, Point 13), research into and criticism of the hypothesis of the necessary and suf®cient conditions usually concentrates on them.
