ABSTRACT

Universities are places where knowledge is created and disseminated, and where ideas, even tenets of belief, are challenged, refined, or even rejected and replaced. It is surprising, therefore, that more attention has not been paid to the way that universities manage their staff. Whether an institution is progressive in practicing ‘human resource management’ or traditional in labeling the activity ‘personnel’ (or even ‘staffing’) is immaterial. Those involved in management will be aware of the challenges that these practices present, as well as the fact that techniques that work in one set of circumstances may have a different outcome in another situation.
