ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, the development of psychoanalysis and the influence of ego psychology on psychodynamic thought was presented. We now turn our attention to advances in psychodynamic theory, including: object relations theory, highlighting attachment, internalization of representations of self and other, and separation-individuation; and self psychology, stressing the central roles in psychological development played by identity, self-cohesion, and empathy. Following this, cognitive and behavioral theories are presented; their divergence from psychodynamic theory is noted, and how they can be used in complementary ways with psychodynamic approaches is suggested.
