ABSTRACT

We have explored together many aspects of life, from its beginning at conception through child development, adulthood, aging, to its ending in death. It is striking how there is nothing in life which is simple or straightforward; we have encountered complexities at all levels. Conception itself can occur in many ways today; as reproductive technologies proliferate, they bring in their wake emotional, relational, ethical, and political problems. Should children who were conceived with sperm from anonymous donors have the right to learn the identity of their biological fathers? If a couple divorces, who has the custody rights over their frozen embryos? To what extent are we moving in the direction of producing “designer” babies?
