ABSTRACT

The name “Camillo Sitte” immediately suggests his immensely popular book of 1889, Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen. The next thought is the concept of “picturesque” and “irregular” town design – a mistaken association as Sitte’s book contained many examples of wholly geometrical and symmetrical places. The third thought is a type of “medieval” or “Nordic” town design – definitely a misconception since the majority of his influences come from Italy and he himself gave plenty of examples from the Renaissance and Baroque as well as modern examples. Among these were Gottfried Semper’s plans for monumental forums in Dresden and Vienna.
