ABSTRACT
The National Education Association (NEA) is “a terrorist” organization? In 2004 that’s what Republican President George W. Bush’s Secretary of Education Rod Paige called the largest of the two teachers’ unions.1 The charge caused what Paige portrayed as a fi restorm of public reaction. Despite the loaded term terrorist, Paige’s comment refl ected the traditional animosity Republicans felt toward the two teachers’ unions.
