ABSTRACT
Perhaps more than any other feature, U.S. culture can be characterized by its individualistic values. From its colonial origins U.S. culture was driven by a desire to pursue religious and political freedom and to live life according to the “beat of one's own drummer,” as Henry David Thoreau proclaimed in his 1854 book Walden.
