ABSTRACT

In an older, rundown neighborhood just outside of Houston, Texas, 10-year-old Sharee makes her way home from school with her younger sister, Nyah, 8, and their half-brother, Freddie, 5, in tow. As the three siblings scurry inside the tiny two-bedroom wood-frame home, slamming the screen door behind them, a familiar voice calls out as they carelessly toss a day’s worth of school books and belongings inside the front door. The two youngest scramble to claim their spot in front of the television for afternoon cartoons, eventually agreeing to share the worn out recliner as the oldest of the trio follows the sound of clanking dishes to the kitchen where she discovers her grandmother, Ella.
