Zainichi: History, identities and politics

Koreans constitute one of the biggest ethnic minority groups in Japan.

According to the Ministry of Justice, there are about 600,000 Koreans living

in Japan.

While this number includes recent Korean immigrant workers,

professionals and students whose residency is temporary, the majority are the

so-called ‘permanent Korean residents in Japan’ or zainichi – people who, or

whose descendants, came to Japan during the colonial period.
