Introduction: Defining the period: Japanese cinema and society at the turn of the millennium

This book is about the representation of minority groups in contemporary

Japanese cinema and about the relationship of this to more general trends in

contemporary Japanese nationalism and multiculturalism. Although there

have been studies of the relationship between Japanese films and Japanese

nationalism in the 1930s and 1940s, this issue has been relatively neglected in

writings on contemporary Japanese cinema.
