Ways to Connect with Community and Home Knowledge
Some teachers think that holding semi-annual, parent-teacher conferences and sending home a monthly calendar are all that is needed to maintain some kind of home-school connection. Others put more effort into class newsletters or homework forms that must be signed by the parent. Although these activities ask parents to be more involved in their children’s education, they do not provide much opportunity for parents to exchange information about the family itself or for teachers to share the expectations of the school. The ideas presented in this chapter involve teachers to a much greater extent and with much greater results.
