ABSTRACT

In this unit, the director is paramount. In sections A and B you are in the role of director for an interpretation of the chosen text, and in section C you are responding to a director’s interpretation of a text as an informed member of an audience. Whether you are the director, or you are recognising the impact a director may have in bringing a play to life for an audience, you need to have a rounded understanding of what a director is responsible for in the creative process from first reading to opening night and, in many cases, beyond. Your examiner will expect you to be able to use appropriate language, terms and expressions to support your responses and for you to have gained a clear understanding of the function of the director from other aspects of the course. There is more to this unit than recognising the work of a director; you need to be able to apply your ideas to your proposed rehearsal and performance of the chosen text in sections A and B, and you need to be able to define what it is that a director has brought to a twentyfirst-century interpretation of the text for section C that may – or may not – be connected back into its original performance conditions.
