ABSTRACT

Some traditional views of TA consider the process of scripting to be complete by the time a person is in late childhood. Berne's own view on this was that scripting was largely complete by around seven years old and in his last book he de®ned script as `An unconscious life plan, made in childhood, reinforced by the parents, justi®ed by subsequent events and culminating in a chosen alternative' (Berne, 1972: 445). Various TA sources indicate the period marking the end of scripting to be somewhere between seven and eleven years old. Woollams and Brown share this view of script as being established in early life, as highlighted in their de®nition: `A script is a personal life plan which an individual decides upon at an early age in reaction to her interpretation of both external and internal events' (Woollams and Brown, 1978: 151).
